DV Lottery Photo Requirements
Every year, hundreds of thousands of Diversity Visa (Green Card Lottery) entries are disqualified due to non-compliant photographs. Here are the exact official specifications required by the U.S. Department of State.
Updated for DV-2026 / DV-2027 Program
1. Exact Technical Specifications
- Dimensions: Exactly 600 × 600 pixels (square 1:1 aspect ratio). Minimum allowed is 600 × 600 px; maximum allowed is 1200 × 1200 px.
- Color Format: 24-bit color in sRGB color space (black-and-white or grayscale photos are strictly rejected).
- File Format: JPEG format (
.jpgor.jpeg). - File Size: Maximum 240 KB (kilobytes). File sizes larger than 240 KB will be rejected by the U.S. State Department application portal.
- Compression: Image compression ratio should be less than or equal to 20:1 to maintain sharpness and facial landmark visibility.
2. Head Composition and Eye Height Ratios
- Head Size (Crown to Chin): The subject's head, measured from the top of the hair to the bottom of the chin, must occupy between 50% and 69% of the image's total height (300 to 414 pixels on a 600 × 600 px image).
- Eye Height: The subject's eye level must be between 56% and 69% from the bottom of the image (336 to 414 pixels from the bottom edge).
- Head Centering: The head must be centered horizontally in the frame.
3. Background and Lighting Rules
- Background: Must be plain white or off-white. No patterns, textures, furniture, or colored backdrops are allowed.
- No Shadows: Shadows on the face, shoulders, or background are common disqualification triggers. Use balanced, diffuse lighting.
- Exposure & Glare: Overexposed (blown-out highlights) or underexposed (dark/grainy) photos fail the automated State Department pre-screening filter.
4. Eyeglasses, Headwear & Facial Expression
- Expression: Neutral facial expression with both eyes open and looking directly into the camera. Mouth must be naturally closed (no smiling with visible teeth, no frowning).
- Headwear: Hats, caps, and head coverings are prohibited, except for religious or medical purposes. When worn for religious reasons, the full face from forehead to chin must be clearly visible with no shadows cast on the face.
- Recency: The photo must have been taken within the last 6 months to reflect your current appearance. Reusing photos from previous DV lottery submissions leads to automatic disqualification.
5. Top 5 Reasons DV Photos Are Disqualified
- Reusing an old photo: The Department of State uses facial recognition AI to compare your submission with past entries and visa applications. Submitting the same photo from a previous year results in instant disqualification.
- Incorrect head proportions: Photos cropped too close (head too big) or taken too far away (head too small).
- Wearing glasses: Any frame, tinted lenses, or glare leads to immediate rejection.
- Altered or filtered photos: Retouching, removing blemishes, airbrushing, or using beauty filters changes facial contours and triggers disqualification.
- Cluttered or dark background: Non-uniform backgrounds or heavy shadows behind the head.
